Over 350 Churches Burned and 70000 Displaced As Hindu Mobs Attack Christian Minorities Under A Silent BJP Regime
July 4, 2026The state of Manipur is facing a terrible humanitarian disaster due to severe violence that started in May 2023. The violent clashes between the Meitei community and the Kuki Zo minority have caused huge loss of life and property. According to official reports updated through late 2024 and 2025 the death toll has reached between 217 and 258 people. Human rights groups have also reported that many more people died inside the temporary relief camps because they did not get medical care and proper living conditions. The severe violence has also left more than 1000 people badly injured during the attacks.
Massive Housing Crisis And Forced Displacement
The destruction of homes has completely changed the area and forced people away from their lands. Official data from the Manipur government shows that between 58821 and 78000 people were forced to run away to save their lives. The damage to property is huge because state records confirm that 7894 houses were completely burned down by mobs while another 2646 homes were partly damaged. This massive destruction has forced tens of thousands of people to live in 174 relief camps for a very long time with no safe way to return to their villages.
Systemic Destruction Of Christian Places Of Worship
Although the conflict is about land and political power the attackers targeted religious places to hurt minority communities. Government reports say that at least 386 religious structures were destroyed including both temples and churches. However Christian groups and independent observers state that the real numbers are much higher. They report that between 300 and 357 churches were burned or destroyed. This includes about 249 Meitei Christian churches that were attacked in the Imphal Valley during the very first 36 hours of the violence.
Total Administrative Failure And Breakdown Of Law
International observers and United Nations experts have strongly criticized the government for failing to stop the violence. The state administration did not maintain law and order and allowed armed mobs to attack minority areas openly. This failure was so bad that the Supreme Court of India intervened and stated that the local police had lost complete control of the situation. Due to this continuous failure the central government had to remove the local administration and impose direct rule in early 2025 to control the crisis.
Urgent Judicial Actions Needed For Permanent Peace
The violence in Manipur shows that minority communities are not safe and need immediate protection. Independent groups like Human Rights Watch have reported worst cases of violence against women and total breakdown of law. The way these attacks were planned shows a clear plan to remove tribal communities from their resource rich lands. To bring back peace the government must start honest judicial investigations provide full financial help to rebuild homes and hold open talks to solve the real problems of all communities.
