Nagpur Police File FIR Against Social Media Influencers for Criticizing Nitin Gadkari and His Ethanol Fuel Policy

In a direct and aggressive attack on free speech, the Nagpur Cyber Police have registered a serious criminal case against several popular social media content creators. These creators simply raised their voices against the national ethanol blended fuel policy, which is promoted by the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. This police action was started after a formal complaint from Shishir Arun Tripathi, who leads the local ruling party social media team in Nagpur. This complaint targeted well known internet figures including Manish Kashyap, Harshit Rathi, Anklesh Inwati, and the creators behind the Desi Boys accounts. The authorities used serious criminal laws to target these individuals because they uploaded videos criticizing the government policy. Using the police force to silence citizens who talk about real daily struggles is a dangerous trend that harms the spirit of a free democracy.

Understanding the Government Massive Push for Ethanol Blending

To understand why this issue is so important, we must look at the actual facts of the national fuel strategy. The government has aggressively pushed the Ethanol Blended Petrol programme to reduce its heavy dependency on foreign oil imports. The original plan of the state was to reach a twenty percent ethanol blend in petrol by the year 2030, but the government later advanced this target to 2025. According to official data, the country has saved more than 24300 crore rupees in foreign exchange over the last few years through this program. The government also claims that blending ethanol has reduced carbon dioxide emissions by many millions of tons. While these big numbers look very impressive on paper, they completely ignore the heavy price that ordinary car and motorcycle owners are paying every single day.

The Real Mechanical Problems and Financial Losses for Car Owners

The aggressive push for twenty percent ethanol fuel has created severe practical problems for millions of vehicle owners across the country. First, ethanol contains about thirty three percent less energy than pure petrol, which directly reduces the fuel efficiency of vehicles. Drivers have reported a clear drop in mileage of around five to ten percent when using blended fuel. This means that middle class citizens must spend more money on fuel to travel the same distance. Second, ethanol is highly corrosive and absorbs moisture from the air very quickly. This chemical property causes severe damage to fuel tanks, fuel pumps, and rubber pipes, especially in older vehicles built before 2023. These older vehicles were never designed to run on high levels of ethanol, and repairing their damaged engines costs a lot of money.

Instead of addressing these genuine technical and financial issues, the state has chosen to use legal threats to silence public anger. The Nagpur Cyber Police filed the case under Sections 356, 352, and 296 of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, alongside Section 67 of the Information Technology Act. These laws deal with criminal defamation, public insults, and sharing offensive material online. Applying such harsh criminal sections against people who criticize a fuel policy is an extreme reaction. Social media influencers are the voice of the common man today because traditional media often ignores everyday struggles. When a content creator points out that the new fuel is damaging engines and costing more money, they are performing a public service, not committing a crime.

The Dangerous Consequences of Silencing the Digital Community

The immediate effect of this police action has been a wave of fear among digital creators. Shortly after the case was registered, some of the targeted social media accounts disappeared from the internet, and other creators stopped talking about the fuel policy. This reaction proves that the state is successfully using fear to stop people from discussing bad policies. When citizens are afraid to talk about the quality of the fuel they buy with their own hard earned money, democracy fails. A government should be confident enough to face criticism and answer questions with facts rather than police actions. Trying to protect the reputation of a minister by arresting critics only proves that the policy itself has deep flaws that cannot be defended logically.

A strong and progressive nation must learn to balance its environmental goals with the basic rights of its citizens. The transition to green energy is a good goal, but it must not be forced upon people at the cost of their personal property and free speech. The government should immediately stop using the police to harass online creators who raise valid questions about the ethanol policy. Instead of forcing everyone to use blended fuel, the state must give consumers a clear choice by keeping pure petrol available at all fuel stations. True progress is achieved when policies are improved through open discussion and feedback, not when critics are silenced through police cases.
