To commemorate the life and legacy of a visionary spiritual leader, Srinagar’s historic Jamia Masjid reverberated the soulful recitation of the Qur’an, bringing together scholars, youth, and communities in a powerful display of unity and remembrance.

As part of Hafta-e-Shahadat observances marking the 35th death anniversary of Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq, a special day-long programme was organised at Jamia Masjid Srinagar by the Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The event combined religious devotion with youth engagement, featuring Qur’an Khwani, a collective prayer, and a Qur’an recitation competition.

Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq was assassinated on May 21, 1990, at his residence in Nigeen. The commemoration aimed to pay homage to his enduring influence on Kashmir’s religious and social landscape.

The programme attracted participation from over 30 prominent Islamic seminaries across IIOJK, including remote regions. Young Qaris showcased their recitation skills before a large audience of religious scholars, imams, and members of the public who had gathered at the mosque.

The event was chaired by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, current head of Anjuman Auqaf and son of the late Mirwaiz. In his address, Umar Farooq highlighted the importance of remembering his father’s contributions to the spiritual and cultural fabric of IIOJK. He described his father as a symbol of guidance and resilience, whose teachings continue to influence and inspire.

He further emphasized that the purpose of the gathering was not solely to honour his father’s memory but also to foster a lasting bond between the younger generation and the Qur’an. The initiative seeks to encourage youth to embrace Islamic teachings and adopt them as a way of life.

“This gathering is a humble effort to motivate our youth to stay connected with the divine message and live according to its wisdom,” said Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. He expressed deep appreciation to all participating institutions, religious figures, and attendees for making the event a success.

All participants of the Qur’an recitation competition were awarded gifts and tokens of appreciation, recognising their dedication and spiritual commitment.

Through such initiatives, the Anjuman Auqaf aims to both preserve the memory of Mirwaiz Farooq and promote Islamic values in today’s generation. The programme stood as a reflection of unity, spirituality, and cultural heritage that remains rooted in IIOJK’s identity.
