Medical Student Murdered in IIOJK: Tensions Rise Over Suspicious Death
April 29, 2025In yet another unsettling incident in IIIOJK, the mysterious death of a young Kashmiri Muslim medical student has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about communal targeting and safety in educational institutions.
A 22-year-old Kashmiri Muslim medical student, Falak Syed Khan, has reportedly been killed under suspicious circumstances inside the boys’ hostel of Government Medical College (GMC) in Jammu, within Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
Falak, a second-year MBBS student from Mendhar, was discovered dead in his room, hanging from the ceiling. Initial reports suggest that a group of Hindutva-affiliated students may have been involved in the incident, raising concerns of communal violence within what should be a safe academic environment.
The gruesome discovery was made on campus, leading to panic among students and an outpouring of grief from his family and peers. College authorities alerted the police immediately after finding his lifeless body. The police have since initiated an investigation and taken cognizance of the case, though no formal arrests have been confirmed at the time of reporting.
Students close to the victim have pointed to growing communal tension in the campus environment. They claim that Kashmiri Muslim students often face discrimination and threats, especially in the Jammu region where Hindutva ideology is reportedly gaining influence in institutional spaces. These allegations have only intensified following Falak’s tragic and sudden death.
While officials have yet to publicly confirm the cause or motive behind the incident, the circumstances surrounding Falak’s death—particularly the way his body was found—have led many to suspect foul play. The claim that his body was staged to look like a suicide has gained traction on social media, with activists and human rights groups calling for a transparent and independent investigation.
Falak’s death is not an isolated event. Human rights observers note a disturbing rise in attacks, harassment, and profiling of Kashmiri students across India, particularly in Jammu. This case further illustrates the climate of fear many face when pursuing education outside their home districts.
The local community in Mendhar has reacted with sorrow and anger. Protests have already begun, demanding justice for the slain student and protection for Kashmiri students inside IIOJK institutions. Many accuse the authorities of failing to protect students from communal elements and demand that the perpetrators be held accountable.
As the investigation continues, family members and fellow students are calling for truth and justice. The tragic loss of Falak Syed Khan has once again brought the spotlight on the vulnerability of young Kashmiri Muslims living and studying under occupation.
