Life has become unbearable in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), where youth are forced to choose between death and a life of oppression.

The recent drone footage of a young Kashmiri, Imtiyaz Ahmad Magray, jumping into a river to end his life, to avoid inhuman torture inflicted upon arbitrarily detainees, has shed light on the dire situation in IIOJK. Continuous operations, dwindling freedom, and daily searches have left Kashmiri youth hopeless, forcing them to prefer death over life under Indian occupation.

According to reports, since August 2019, 995 Kashmiris have fallen victim to Indian brutality, while 2465 are on the list of severely injured. The use of pellet guns, rape, enforced disappearances, and home searches have crippled Kashmiri youth’s will to live, leaving suicide as the only option.

The international community has expressed concern over the human rights situation in IIOJK, with organizations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch condemning India’s actions. However, the silence of Western media and global organizations has emboldened India to continue its state terrorism in IIOJK.

The situation on the ground is grim. Kashmiri youth are subjected to inhumane treatment, with many forced to live in constant fear of arrest, torture, and extrajudicial killings. The Indian occupation forces have been accused of using excessive force, including pellet guns, which have caused widespread injuries and disabilities.

The psychological impact of the occupation is also taking a toll on Kashmiri youth. Many are suffering from mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The lack of access to education, employment, and basic amenities has further exacerbated the situation.

The story of Imtiyaz Ahmad Magray serves as a loud and clear message of the desperation and hopelessness that pervades the region. His death is a tragic reminder of the human cost of the conflict and the need for international action to protect the rights of Kashmiris.

The international community must take immediate action to address the human rights situation in IIOJK. This includes calling for an end to Indian occupation, ensuring accountability for human rights abuses, and providing support to Kashmiri civilians affected by the conflict.
