Indian Forces Target Hurriyat Leaders in IIOJK
April 11, 2025In a new wave of repression, Indian authorities have raided the homes of top Tehreek-e-Hurriyat leaders in IIOJK, escalating tensions in the region.
Indian forces recently raided the homes of leaders from the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), a move that has sparked outrage among locals and human rights groups. The raids focused on the properties of jailed leader Bashir Ahmed Butt, also known as Peer Saifullah, and Mohammad Ashraf Laya, both of whom are prominent members of the Hurriyat Conference.
Peer Saifullah, who is currently incarcerated in Tihar Jail, New Delhi, had his house in Zadoora, Pulwama, searched by police. During the raid, police officers seized various personal items, including house documents, bank papers, books, letterheads, pamphlets, and letters. The authorities have not provided any clear justification for the confiscation of these materials.
Similarly, the house of Mohammad Ashraf Laya in Baramulla was also raided by the Indian police. These actions have raised concerns about the growing harassment of families associated with the Hurriyat movement. Reports suggest that during the raids, police officers intimidated and threatened the families of the jailed leaders. They were reportedly told to prevent Hurriyat activists from speaking out for the right to self-determination or face serious consequences.
The raids appear to be part of a broader campaign to suppress the Hurriyat leadership, which continues to advocate for Kashmir’s right to self-determination and independence from Indian rule. The Indian government, under Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, has been targeting individuals and groups who support the cause of Kashmir’s freedom. These actions highlight the increasing efforts to silence voices calling for the region’s independence.
The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has condemned these recent raids, calling them part of a larger pattern of harassment aimed at stifling the Kashmiri people’s desire for freedom. Advocate Abdul Rashid Minhas, a spokesperson for the APHC, issued a statement denouncing the Indian government’s actions. He emphasized that such tactics would not suppress the strong sentiments for freedom that many Kashmiris hold.
In addition to the raids, the authorities have continued to disrupt daily life in the region. Families of Hurriyat leaders have reported increased pressure and intimidation. Despite this, the movement for Kashmir’s self-determination remains strong, with widespread support for those who challenge Indian control over the region.
The Indian government’s ongoing actions reflect its determination to maintain control over Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir by any means necessary, including the targeting of political leaders and activists. As the situation continues to unfold, many are watching closely to see whether the international community will respond to these human rights violations.
