Fresh Cordon and Search Operation Launched by Indian Forces in Shopian, IIOJK
May 14, 2025As the Kashmir conflict continues to dominate headlines, Indian troops have launched yet another large-scale search operation in Shopian, escalating fear and uncertainty among local residents in the region.
Indian troops have intensified their military activities in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) by launching a fresh cordon and search operation in Shopian district. This latest move has once again drawn attention to the ongoing state of unrest in the region.
The operation was carried out in the Shukroo area of Shopian, where forces reportedly cordoned off the locality during the early hours of the day. According to eyewitnesses, a heavy presence of armed personnel sealed entry and exit points, while a house-to-house search was initiated.
A senior Indian police official claimed that an exchange of fire occurred during the operation, stating that three militants were believed to be trapped in the area. However, no official confirmation about casualties or arrests was provided at the time of reporting.
The police further noted that the operation was launched based on intelligence inputs regarding militant presence in the vicinity. The search efforts are part of an ongoing strategy by Indian forces aimed at eliminating what they term as “anti-national elements” in IIOJK.
Meanwhile, the local population in Shopian has expressed concern over the growing frequency of such operations. Residents say that these crackdowns disrupt daily life, instill fear, and often lead to arbitrary detentions, property damage, and harassment.
Cordon and search operations in Kashmir have become a routine part of the security landscape, particularly in districts like Shopian, Pulwama, and Anantnag, which have been hotspots of military operations in IIOJK.
Mobile internet services in the Shukroo area were also suspended during the operation— a common tactic used by authorities to prevent the spread of information and to maintain control over communications during such encounters.
These operations often result in alleged fake encounters, a claim repeatedly raised by locals and human rights groups, who accuse Indian forces of manipulating such situations to justify killings and arrests.
As tensions remain high, Kashmiris continue to live under constant surveillance and military pressure, with human rights organizations calling for accountability and transparency in all counterinsurgency activities conducted by the Indian state.
The international community has also been urged to intervene, particularly in light of recent appeals by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and other Kashmiri leaders, who argue that peace and justice in the region are impossible without global attention and mediation.
