Controversy Over Land Allotment to Sri Lankan Cricketer in IIOJK
March 10, 2025The allocation of land in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) to a foreign cricketer has sparked outrage, raising concerns over administrative transparency and foul political motives.
A heated debate erupted in the Legislative Assembly of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) after it was revealed that a former Sri Lankan cricketer had been granted hundreds of kanals of land in the disputed region. Lawmakers questioned the legitimacy of this allocation and demanded answers from the administration.
The controversy gained traction during the Question Hour when CPI-M MLA Muhammad Yosouf Tarigami disclosed that the Delhi-imposed administration, led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, had allotted land free of cost to the cricketer in Kathua district, Jammu region. His revelation prompted strong reactions from assembly members.
Congress MLA Ghulam Ahmad Mir also expressed concerns, questioning how a foreign national could receive land in IIOJK under such terms. “This is a serious issue that needs immediate attention,” he asserted, calling for further investigation into the matter.
In response to the growing concerns, Minister for Agriculture Production Department Javaid Ahmad Dar acknowledged the seriousness of the issue. However, he stated that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Revenue Department, suggesting that further scrutiny is required before any conclusions can be drawn.
Reports indicate that Ceylon Beverages Limited, a company promoted by former Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan, was granted 206 kanals of land in Kathua district. The allocation was made at a rate of Rs eight lakh per kanal, raising questions about the transparency and intent behind the decision.
Political analysts and local leaders argue that such land allotments to foreign individuals in a disputed region raise concerns about demographic changes and administrative favoritism. Many believe that this move sets a controversial precedent and requires urgent review to ensure fairness and accountability.
As the issue continues to gain attention, opposition leaders and activists are demanding a detailed investigation into the legality of the transaction. The decision’s implications for the region’s political and social fabric remain a pressing concern for stakeholders in IIOJK.
