UN Envoy Urges Global Action on Enforced Disappearances in IIOJK
May 17, 2025As global powers turn a blind eye, IIOJK continues to suffer under a shadow of violence and enforced disappearances, calling for urgent international intervention.
At a recent UN Security Council briefing, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, sounded the alarm over escalating human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
Ambassador Iftikhar revealed that India used the Pahalgam incident as a cover to detain over 2,000 Kashmiris. He described these arrests as part of an ongoing strategy to silence the Kashmiri people’s legitimate demand for the right to self-determination.
He drew attention to alarming findings in the region, including the discovery of thousands of unmarked and unidentified graves. These findings, he said, suggest systematic and severe human rights violations.
According to Iftikhar, credible investigations indicate a grim pattern of enforced disappearances. He accused Indian forces of abducting, torturing, and killing civilians through extrajudicial means—actions that he described as deeply disturbing and in violation of international human rights norms.
The Pakistani envoy emphasized the urgent need to resolve the growing crisis of missing persons in IIOJK. He called for international oversight and accountability to uncover the truth behind these atrocities.
Ambassador Iftikhar urged the UN and the global community to prioritize peaceful conflict resolution. He stressed that preventing further escalation and resolving the Kashmir dispute diplomatically is vital to ending ongoing abuses.
His remarks served as a serious reminder that the silence and inaction of global powers may only deepen the suffering in IIOJK. The ambassador reinforced that the issue is not only a regional conflict but a pressing international human rights concern.
