India Tightens Restrictions in IIOJK on Anniversary of Article 370 Abrogation
August 5, 2024On the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, Indian authorities have intensified restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir. These measures, justified as heightened security, clearly violate the UN mandate on this disputed territory.
The increased restrictions aim to prevent rallies, protests, and seminars against India’s illegal action of August 5, 2019. The heavy military presence and numerous checkpoints along the Jammu-Srinagar highway underscore India’s ongoing occupation and blatant disregard for international law.
Jammu and Kashmir are recognized by the UN as a disputed territory. Any attempt by India to alter its status contravenes UN resolutions. The abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to the region, was widely condemned by the international community and has led to a severe escalation in human rights abuses and repression.
The Indian government’s decision to celebrate the anniversary of this move through rallies and events is provocative. Such actions only serve to inflame tensions in the already volatile South Asian region.
The ‘Ekatma Mahotsav Rally’ organized by the BJP in RS Pura on August 5 exemplifies India’s efforts to normalize its occupation and suppress the rights of the Kashmiri people. These actions attempt to present an air of legitimacy to what the international community recognizes as a breach of international law.
Hurriyat leaders in Srinagar have called on the global community to condemn India’s actions. They urge the world to hold India accountable for its violations of international law. The leaders emphasized that the people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve the right to self-determination and freedom from occupation.
Suppressing the rights of the Kashmiri people will only lead to more instability and conflict in the region. The international community must take a firm stand to ensure peace and justice in Jammu and Kashmir.
