Students in IIOJK Protest Over Budhal Tragedy, Demand Justice for Victims
February 2, 2025A tragedy in Budhal, Rajouri, has left 17 dead, including 14 children, and the IIOJK Students Association is demanding justice and accountability from the Indian government, sparking protests at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
The Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) Students Association recently held a protest at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), condemning the Indian government’s insufficient response to the devastating tragedy in Budhal, Rajouri. This incident, which has claimed the lives of 17 people—14 of them children—over the past two months, has been attributed to severe water contamination believed to be caused by the Indian army.
The protest was organized by the IIOJK Students Association, led by their spokesperson and media in-charge, Zubair Reshi. Kashmiri students, activists, and scholars showed strong solidarity, joining the protest to demand justice for the victims. The demonstration highlighted the government’s apparent indifference to the ongoing crisis and aimed to draw attention to the plight of the affected families, who are still waiting for compensation, answers, and accountability.
Reshi, speaking at the protest, criticized the puppet administration in IIOJK for its failure to take responsibility for the Budhal tragedy. He expressed outrage over the lack of urgency and commitment to addressing the disaster, pointing out that the families of the victims continue to suffer without relief. He emphasized the need for justice, stating that the tragedy should not be forgotten or overlooked.
During the protest, Reshi submitted a memorandum to the AMU Proctor, which was later forwarded to the President of India. The memorandum called for immediate financial compensation for the families of the victims, as well as a thorough, impartial investigation into the cause of the tragedy. Additionally, it demanded accountability from the local administration for its failure to prevent such incidents from occurring.
This protest serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by the people in IIOJK, who are often left without justice or support in the face of adversity. The IIOJK Students Association’s call for justice reflects the growing frustration among Kashmiri youth and activists, who continue to fight for their rights and the well-being of their communities in the region.
The protest at AMU represents the collective voice of Kashmiri students and activists seeking justice for the victims of the Budhal tragedy. With demands for compensation, accountability, and a fair investigation, they continue to stand united in their fight for the rights and dignity of the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
