With upcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, the Congress party has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly misleading Indian citizens regarding the recent resolution passed on Jammu and Kashmir’s special status restoration. The legislative assembly of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) passed a resolution on November 7, introduced by the ruling National Conference, advocating for the return of the region’s special status.

The resolution’s passage sparked strong reactions from BJP members, who organized protests and disrupted the session of the newly elected IIOJK Assembly. Congress leaders claim that the BJP’s opposition to the resolution is being used as a political strategy to influence voters in the upcoming Maharashtra and Jharkhand elections.

“The BJP is exploiting emotional issues to mislead people,” stated Congress IIOJK vice-president Ravinder Sharma. According to Sharma, the BJP is heightening the rhetoric against Congress to gain electoral advantage, stirring public opinion on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir’s autonomy.

Sharma reaffirmed Congress’s commitment to restoring IIOJK’s full statehood with its former special status. He emphasized that Congress will continue to advocate for measures that protect land, jobs, resources, and cultural identity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Congress leaders believe that reclaiming the region’s unique identity is vital to securing residents’ rights and opportunities amidst ongoing political challenges.
