Resolution Passed in Assembly Signals Strong Push for IIOJK’s Autonomy: O. Abdullah
November 8, 2024“Through the resolution passed in the assembly, your voices on the special status of our region have reached the world, showing clearly what we aim to achieve,” CM remarked.
In a bold move, the Legislative Assembly of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) passed a resolution advocating for the restoration of the region’s special status, a significant development that has drawn attention to the demands of the Kashmiri people. According to Kashmir Media Service, this resolution calls on the Indian government to consider a constitutional pathway to reinstate the privileges and rights once granted to the former state before its reorganization in 2019.
Chief Minister of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Omar Abdullah, addressed a gathering in Ganderbal, emphasizing the importance of this resolution. “Through the resolution passed in the assembly, your voices on the special status of our region have reached the world, showing clearly what we aim to achieve,” he remarked. Abdullah highlighted that this aligns with the National Conference’s manifesto, underscoring a commitment to implementing promises made during elections.
Support for the resolution also came from Tariq Hameed Karra, president of the Congress chapter in Jammu and Kashmir, who praised the assembly’s move, seeing it as a step toward restoring constitutional and democratic rights to the region’s residents. However, Karra voiced concern over recent conduct by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members, specifically their disruptions during a debate on Article 370. He condemned their actions, such as standing on tables during discussions, as a breach of parliamentary decorum, arguing that such behavior disrespects the democratic process and values the assembly represents.
The resolution reflects growing calls within Jammu and Kashmir for a return to its former status, signaling a desire for restored autonomy and highlighting regional political friction as residents and leaders push for legislative and democratic integrity.
