Series of Imam Murders in Uttar Pradesh Raise Alarms over Safety of Muslim Religious Leaders

In a disturbing trend, two imams have been killed in separate incidents in Uttar Pradesh, raising serious concerns about the safety of religious leaders in the BJP-ruled state. Maulana Akram, an imam from Bhensia village in Moradabad District, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants. In another incident, 50-year-old imam Fazlur Rahman was found murdered in Shamli district. His mentally disabled son was present during the attack.

These murders follow closely on the heels of the killing of 67-year-old Maulana Farooq in Pratapgarh’s Sonpur village. Farooq, who was the district general secretary of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, was murdered in a similarly violent manner. This string of killings within a short period has cast a shadow of fear and insecurity over the Muslim clerical community in Uttar Pradesh.

Shaukat Ali, president of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) in Uttar Pradesh, condemned the BJP government for the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. “Our Ulema are being murdered continuously in Uttar Pradesh; the BJP government is silent, the criminals are completely flouting the law and order, first in Pratapgarh, in Bhensia village, Maulana Akram Sahib was shot dead by unknown people. This is very sad,” said Ali.

The recent wave of violence against Muslim clerics highlights a growing sense of vulnerability among religious leaders. Ali’s remarks reflect widespread discontent and fear within the community, accusing the government of failing to protect its citizens and maintain law and order.

These incidents underscore the urgent need for the state government to address the security concerns of religious leaders and ensure justice for the victims.
