Blood on State Hands: Naga Guard Killed as Government Abandons Manipur to Militant Violence

April 25, 2026 Off By Sharp Media

The state of Manipur is currently a war zone where law and order have completely vanished. A shocking and brutal attack recently took place that proves the government has lost control over armed groups. A twenty nine year old man named Horshokmi Jamang was murdered in cold blood while serving as a Naga Village Guard. This young man was out on a routine patrol to protect his community when he was targeted and killed. His death is a clear sign that the peace talks and ceasefire deals in the region are nothing more than a failure.

The Brutal Ambush in Sinakeithei Village

The deadly attack happened near Sinakeithei village in the Ukhrul district during the early hours of Friday. A group of heavily armed militants hid in the dark and waited for the patrol party to pass by. Without any warning they opened fire on the Indian security forces and the local guards. Horshokmi Jamang died instantly on the spot. He was a resident of Chatric Khullen village and only wanted to keep his people safe. This ambush shows that the hills of Manipur are no longer safe even for those who are officially tasked with providing security.

Broken Peace Deals and Government Failure

The most frustrating part of this murder is that the killers are suspected to be members of groups under a Suspension of Operations pact. These groups signed an agreement with the Indian government to stop all fighting. In exchange they were allowed to live in special camps. However it is now obvious that these militants are leaving their camps with weapons to carry out attacks. The government has failed to monitor these groups and this negligence is costing innocent lives.

Staggering Statistics of a Year Long War

The violence in Manipur has been going on since May 3 in the year 2023 and the numbers are terrifying. Over two hundred and twenty people have been killed in this ethnic conflict so far. More than sixty thousand people have been forced to run away from their homes and are now living in miserable conditions in relief camps. Thousands of homes and shops have been burned to the ground. Despite the presence of thousands of extra soldiers the state is still burning.

The Danger of Dragging Nagas into the Conflict

The Naga community has tried its best to stay neutral in the fight between the Meitei and Kuki groups. But attacks like this one are pushing them to the edge. The Tangkhul Naga Long which is a powerful local body is extremely angry about the killing of Jamang. They are demanding to know why the government is letting armed militants roam freely in Naga areas.

Economic Ruin and the Cost of Protests

Every time someone is killed the people have no choice but to protest. The United Naga Council called for a three day total shutdown after this ambush. While this is a way to show grief it also destroys the local economy. For three days everything stops including markets and schools and transport. Poor people who work for daily wages are the ones who suffer the most. Manipur has already lost billions of rupees due to constant strikes and violence.

Thousands of Stolen Weapons Still on the Streets

A major reason why this violence never ends is because the state is flooded with illegal guns. Last year nearly five thousand weapons were stolen from government police stations and armories. These include high power assault rifles and grenades. Only a small number of these weapons have been recovered by the police. This means thousands of dangerous weapons are still being used by ethnic militias to kill people.

A Complete Lack of Justice and Accountability

In a normal country a group of men cannot just ambush a patrol and disappear. But in Manipur this is happening every week. More than ten thousand police cases have been filed since the start of the conflict but very few people have been arrested or punished. When the state fails to punish killers it encourages more violence. The family of Horshokmi Jamang deserves justice but the history of this conflict shows that the killers often walk free.

The Failure of Military and Intelligence Agencies

It is a total failure of the intelligence agencies that a large group of militants could plan and execute an ambush in a high security area. The government has deployed a massive number of paramilitary troops but they always seem to arrive after the damage is done. The local village guards are being used as shields on the front lines without proper equipment or support.

Justice for Jamang and a Call for Real Peace

The murder of Horshokmi Jamang must be the final straw for the government. There can be no peace as long as armed groups are allowed to break ceasefire rules whenever they like. The killers must be hunted down and the stolen weapons must be taken back by force. The state needs to show that it still has the power to protect its people. Peace will only come when the law is stronger than the militants and when every citizen can live without the fear of being killed in an ambush. The time for excuses is over and the time for action is now.
