China Renames Arunachal Pradesh as Zangnan to Defy India and Claim Sovereignty

April 13, 2026 Off By Sharp Media

China has taken a very aggressive and bold step by officially renaming thirty locations in Arunachal Pradesh. They are now calling this entire region Zangnan or South Tibet to show the world that they believe the land is an integral part of China. This is the fifth time since 2017 that Beijing has changed these names on official maps to create a new reality. By using Mandarin and Tibetan names China is trying to erase the local history and identity of the land. This is a clear attempt to take control of the territory through administrative paperwork and global mapping.

The Strategy of Renaming Towns and Mountains

The Chinese government is not just talking but is actively changing the facts on the ground every single year. In 2017 they started with only six names but now the total number of renamed sites has gone above eighty. Each new list is longer than the last one which shows that China is becoming more confident in its claims. They want the international community to see this region as a part of their country and not a disputed zone. Experts believe that this mapping strategy is a slow and clever way to take control without starting a full scale war.

A Weak and Ineffective Response from New Delhi

The response from the government in New Delhi has been very weak and lacks any real power. Every time China releases a new list of names the foreign ministry only gives a small and routine statement. They say the land belongs to India but they take no strong action to stop China from doing this again. This quiet diplomacy shows a lack of courage when facing a powerful neighbor like Beijing. The government talks very tough in domestic politics but acts very scared when it has to face a real global rival.

History of the Violent Border Conflict

The fight over this border has been going on for many decades and led to a major war in 1962. Thousands of soldiers died because the two countries could not agree on where the actual border lies. China does not accept the old boundaries and claims the entire region of Arunachal Pradesh has always been a part of Tibet. Today they are using their massive economic and military power to push these claims further into reality. The border remains a very dangerous place where the risk of conflict is rising every single day.

Massive Double Standard in State Policy

There is a huge and obvious difference in how the state treats China compared to how it treats Kashmir. In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir the government uses nearly nine hundred thousand soldiers to control the local population. They use force and guns and strict laws to stop any movement for freedom or dissent. However when China takes land and renames cities in the east the government stays silent and does nothing. This shows that the state is only brave against its own people but is very soft against a real foreign enemy.

Force in Kashmir and Silence on the Border

Since 2019 the situation in Kashmir has become much worse with thousands of people kept in jail without any trial. The state uses the Public Safety Act and other harsh laws to crush the local people in the north. But in the east China is building whole new villages and military outposts on disputed land and no force is used to stop them. This double standard proves that the government is more interested in military control over civilians than in protecting the actual borders of the country from a foreign superpower.

Economic Reality and the Fear of Beijing

One major reason for this weak behavior is that China has a much larger economy and a far stronger military. In 2020 at least twenty soldiers were killed in a violent clash in the Galwan Valley. This event showed that the current leadership is not ready for a real war with a superpower like China. Because of this fear the government allows China to rename mountains and rivers without any real pushback. They are choosing to stay quiet and accept these changes because they know they cannot win an economic or military fight.

A Failing Policy on Global Standing

When a country acts tough only against the weak and the innocent it loses all its respect on the world stage. By ignoring Chinese aggression the government looks vulnerable and weak to the rest of the world. At the same time the harsh military actions in Kashmir bring a lot of international criticism regarding human rights and democracy. A strong nation should have a consistent policy that protects its land and respects its people equally. The current strategy of being a lamb abroad and a tiger at home is a total failure for the nation.

Losing the Land One Name at a Time

If the government does not change its weak policy China will continue to rename every single inch of the land. Eventually the original names will be forgotten in international records and the maps will only show the Chinese version. To protect national integrity the state must stop using force against civilians and start standing up to its actual rivals. Without a real plan the borders will keep shrinking and the pride of the nation will continue to fade away under the constant pressure from China.
