US Ambassador Warns India against Crossing Redline in Cooperation Amid Alleged Assassination Plot Probe
April 1, 2024The United States Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, has issued a cautionary statement to India, emphasizing the importance of respecting boundaries in the cooperative relationship between the two nations. Garcetti highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the US and India in the investigation of an alleged foiled assassination plot against Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.
Garcetti, as reported, addressed concerns surrounding Khalistani marches and threats made by Pannun, underscoring the protection of free speech within the US legal framework. He reiterated that American citizens could only face conviction or deportation in accordance with the laws of their country.
The US envoy’s remarks come in the wake of threats issued by Pannun last year, including a warning against Air India operations on November 19 and a threat of an attack on the Indian Parliament on December 13, the anniversary of the 2001 terror attack.
Regarding the ongoing investigation into the alleged assassination plot targeting Pannun, Garcetti highlighted the collaborative efforts between New Delhi and Washington, signaling the strength and closeness of the India-US relationship.
However, Garcetti stressed the importance of respecting boundaries and avoiding any violation of international norms. He emphasized that no government employee from any country should be implicated in an assassination plot targeting a foreign citizen.
Garcetti’s comments underscore the delicate balance between cooperation and maintaining sovereignty and legal integrity. They also reflect the complexities of international relations, particularly in cases involving security threats and criminal investigations.
As India and the US navigate this sensitive issue, Garcetti’s reminder serves as a crucial guideline for both nations to uphold the principles of law and diplomacy while addressing shared challenges.
