UK Government Urged to Act on Kashmir and Palestine Disputes
January 19, 2025Prominent scholar and social figure, Dr. Khurshid Ahmed Chaudhry, has called on the UK government to play an active role in resolving the longstanding Kashmir and Palestine disputes, emphasizing the urgent need for justice and peace.
Dr. Khurshid Ahmed Chaudhry, the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the renowned NGO, Institute of Peace and Development (INSPAD), has urged the UK government to take a more proactive role in addressing two of the world’s most protracted conflicts—the Kashmir and Palestine disputes. In a recent meeting with INSPAD President Dr. Muhammad Tahir Tabassum and Secretary General Ms. Kishwar Aqeel, Dr. Chaudhry expressed grave concern over the ongoing violations of human rights in both regions, calling for immediate international intervention.
During the meeting, Dr. Chaudhry highlighted the dire situation faced by Kashmiri leaders, many of whom have been imprisoned under false charges in India and in Indian Illegally Ocupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). He emphasized that these leaders are being subjected to illegal detention and harsh conditions, which he described as a clear violation of international law.
“Many Kashmiri leaders are languishing in notorious Indian jails and in the occupied territories under fabricated charges, a blatant violation of their fundamental rights,” Dr. Chaudhry stated. He urged the UK government and other international bodies to press India for the immediate and unconditional release of all illegally detained Hurriyat leaders and activists. He further expressed concern over their deteriorating health due to inadequate food and unsanitary conditions in prisons, which continue to worsen their physical well-being.
Dr. Chaudhry also addressed the situation in Gaza, acknowledging the recent ceasefire agreement between Gaza and Israel as an encouraging development. However, he stressed the importance of implementing the terms of the ceasefire to ensure that peace can be achieved in the Middle East. “The ceasefire is a positive step, but its successful implementation is essential to establishing lasting peace in the region,” Dr. Chaudhry remarked.
His call for a peaceful resolution echoed the need for greater international involvement to hold all parties accountable and to create a just and sustainable framework for peace in both Palestine and Kashmir.
Dr. Khurshid Chaudhry also praised the outstanding work done by INSPAD, particularly the efforts of Dr. Muhammad Tahir Tabassum, the President of the organization. He highlighted the success of the Global Peace and Religious Harmony Conference organized by INSPAD at the British House of Commons last year, which attracted a large number of parliamentarians and community leaders. The conference served as a platform for promoting peace, interfaith dialogue, and global religious harmony, leaving a lasting impact on all participants.
“The Global Peace and Religious Harmony Conference was an exemplary program, bringing together members of Parliament and various community leaders to discuss critical global issues. INSPAD’s work in this area is commendable,” Dr. Chaudhry said.
Dr. Tahir Tabassum, President of INSPAD, provided a comprehensive briefing on the organization’s ongoing and upcoming initiatives. He outlined the various programs planned for the year, which aim to further promote peace, human rights, and religious harmony across the globe. INSPAD’s mission to foster understanding and cooperation among different faiths and cultures continues to guide its work in tackling global conflicts and promoting social justice.
Dr. Khurshid Ahmed Chaudhry’s call for the UK government to play a more active role in resolving the Kashmir and Palestine disputes underscores the urgent need for international diplomacy and intervention. With the human rights situation in both regions worsening and the potential for peace still on the horizon, the need for a concerted effort to address these conflicts has never been greater. Dr. Chaudhry’s support for the work of INSPAD further highlights the importance of organizations that work tirelessly to promote global peace, religious harmony, and justice for oppressed people around the world.
