Systematic Property Seizures in IIOJK: BJP’s Move to Alter the Demographics

The ongoing property confiscation in IIOJK of two more Kashmiris raises serious concerns about economic suppression and demographic changes in the region.

The Indian government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has once again taken possession of properties belonging to Kashmiri residents in Sopore district, part of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Authorities recently seized four kanals and nine marlas of orchard land owned by Irshad Ahmad Reshi, a resident of Yamberzalwari, valuing the land at Rs 21,13,750. Additionally, two kanals and five marlas of orchard land, worth Rs 17,77,500, were confiscated from Bashir Ahmad Mir, a resident of Harwan Bomai.

Since the revocation of Kashmir’s special status in August 2019, the BJP-led administration has taken control of numerous properties belonging to Kashmiris under various justifications. These actions have intensified in recent years, sparking concerns among local communities.

Many experts and Kashmiri leaders believe that the mass confiscation of properties is part of a broader strategy to weaken the local economy and change the demographic balance of the region. By seizing land from local Kashmiris, authorities are creating conditions that may allow the settlement of non-Kashmiris, fundamentally altering the social and cultural fabric of the region.

The ongoing actions have led to widespread unrest, as many locals fear they may be the next victims of property seizures. Political analysts argue that such measures are designed to suppress Kashmiri identity and silence dissent against the government’s policies.

The economic impact of these seizures is also significant. Many Kashmiris rely on agriculture, particularly orchards, for their livelihoods. Losing their land means not only financial hardship but also a loss of generational wealth and stability.

The international community has expressed concerns over these developments, with human rights organizations calling for immediate intervention. However, the Indian government continues to justify these measures as part of broader security policies.

As property seizures continue, the people of IIOJK remain uncertain about their future. Many believe that these actions serve as a tool to subjugate them economically while paving the way for demographic changes in the region.
