Peace in South Asia Hinges on Kashmir Resolution: British MP

As tensions ease between India and Pakistan, British MPs are seizing the moment to amplify global calls for a peaceful resolution to the decades-long Kashmir conflict — rooted in justice and the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.

British Member of Parliament James Frith has made a compelling case for resolving the Kashmir conflict, emphasizing that peace in South Asia is impossible without addressing the long-standing dispute. Speaking in support of the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan, Frith stressed that lasting peace and improved bilateral ties depend on recognizing the right to self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, as laid out in United Nations resolutions.

Frith called for an immediate plebiscite in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and urged for inclusive participation from leadership on both sides of the Line of Control. He believes that only a consensus-driven solution, determined by the Kashmiri people themselves, can end the cycle of conflict.

In a significant announcement, Frith revealed plans to host a conference on the Kashmir issue in the British Parliament this July. He stated that he and other like-minded MPs will pressure the UK government and Foreign Secretary to intervene diplomatically and encourage trilateral dialogue involving India, Pakistan, and Kashmiri representatives.

Highlighting the concern of over one million Kashmiris living in the UK, Frith noted that many remain deeply worried about the safety and human rights situation of their families in the region. Resolving the Kashmir issue, he said, would not only bring relief to these communities but also empower them to fully engage in the UK’s political and social development.

Raja Najabat Hussain, Founder Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Self-Determination Movement International, extended his gratitude to all British MPs and local leaders supporting the Kashmir cause. He especially acknowledged the efforts of both MPs from Bury and thanked the local public, councillors, and activists from North England who have worked tirelessly to highlight the plight of the Kashmiri people.

Hussain also expressed deep appreciation for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Kashmir, including key figures like Barrister Imran Hussain, Debbie Abrahams, Tahir Ali, Afzal Khan, Mohammad Yasin, Naz Shah, and others who have consistently raised the issue in Parliament. Their collective efforts, he said, reflect a growing consensus in the UK political landscape in favor of justice for Kashmir.

He expressed optimism that with growing international awareness and the recent de-escalation in the region, the global community has a rare chance to act. The time is now, he said, to honor the aspirations of the Kashmiri people and implement the relevant UN resolutions for a fair and lasting solution.

Local figures, including Shaheena Haroon Raja, Taimoor Tariq, and former mayors and councillors from Bury, also participated in the event, showing unified local support for Kashmir’s right to peace and justice.
