Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has highlighted the pivotal role of masajid in fostering unity, education, and addressing social issues among youth in Indian-illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). His remarks came during the foundation-laying ceremony for the renovation of the historic Haji Abdul Salam Qalandar Sahib Masjid in Srinagar’s Kadal area.

At the ceremony, Mirwaiz emphasized that masajid should act as hubs for social reform and multifaceted community engagement, drawing inspiration from the Prophet’s Mosque (PBUH). He urged that mosque doors remain open to all Muslim sects and communities and highlighted the need for designated areas where women can participate in worship, sermons, and community activities.

Mirwaiz also called for the establishment of religious schools or madrasas in conjunction with masajid to provide education in both contemporary and religious subjects. He voiced concerns over rising social issues and urged masjid imams, preachers, and local committees to take proactive steps in combating these problems.

The Mirwaiz’s visit to the Kadal area was met with a warm reception from the local community, marking his return after a lengthy absence of six to seven years. His call for masajid to play a more active role in societal and educational development reflects a broader vision for using religious institutions to address contemporary challenges and promote holistic community growth.
