Kashmir’s Political Landscape: Challenges and Prospects amidst Lok Sabha Polls

After more than six years of waiting, the Indian government has failed to initiate a meaningful political process in Kashmir, exacerbating the trust deficit between Srinagar and New Delhi. The Modi government’s indifference towards the plight of Kashmiris has become evident, with policies that neglect their grievances and instead prioritize nationalist ambitions.

The government’s refusal to engage with diverse political voices in Kashmir has heightened tensions, accompanied by attempts to reshape the region’s demographic and political landscape in favor of the central government. Gerrymandering of constituencies and sidelining traditional parties demonstrate a deliberate strategy to consolidate power.

The revocation of Article 370 paved the way for restructuring political frameworks in Jammu and Kashmir for BJP, sidelining traditional parties and fostering dissent within them to create a more favorable political environment for the BJP. The suppression of dissent, labeling of political parties as “unlawful associations,” and relentless targeting by state agencies have created a significant political vacuum.

The upcoming elections raise questions about how traditional parties will reconnect with an alienated population demanding the restoration of statehood. However, with the opposition alliance fragmented, the BJP appears to have the upper hand, capitalizing on strategic election planning and divisive politics.

The BJP’s nationalist rhetoric contrasts sharply with the opposition’s emphasis on lost identity and statehood, but historical mistrust and allegations of betrayal pose challenges in mobilizing support.
