Indian Farmers’ Protest Disrupts Railway Traffic Between Delhi and Katra
May 6, 2024The ongoing farmers’ agitation at the Shambhu border in Punjab has brought railway traffic to a standstill, resulting in the cancellation of four trains between Delhi and Katra, while the arrival of several others is delayed by several hours from their scheduled times.
According to reports, a railway official disclosed that the timetable of trains operating between the Delhi-Katra sections has been severely disrupted due to the protests in Punjab.
As a consequence, the Railways have decided to cancel the Jammu Mail, Shalimar, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi-Kalka Express, and Udhampur-Delhi Sarai Rohilla AC Express until May 7.
“Trains including Vande Bharat, Jhelum, Begumpura, Himgiri Express, Pooja Superfast, Rajdhani, Uttar Sampark Kranti, Swaraj Express, Malwa Superfast, and Sealdah Express will be diverted to their destination through alternative routes instead of the fixed route, causing delays in their arrivals from the scheduled timings,” explained an official.
The disruption in railway services highlights the ripple effects of the ongoing farmers’ agitation, not only impacting transportation but also inconveniencing passengers and disrupting travel plans. The cancellation and delay of trains underscore the challenges faced by both the railway authorities and commuters amidst the ongoing protests.
The decision to divert trains through alternative routes reflects efforts to mitigate the impact of the disruptions and ensure continued connectivity between important destinations. However, the diversion is likely to result in extended travel times and inconvenience for passengers relying on these services.
The farmers’ protest, which has been ongoing for some time now, has garnered widespread attention and support, with farmers demanding the repeal of contentious agricultural laws enacted by the Indian government. The agitation has led to various forms of protest, including road blockades and demonstrations, significantly affecting transportation and commerce in the region.
