In June, Indian forces in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) martyred twelve Kashmiris in continued acts of state terrorism. According to reports, five of these individuals were killed in fake encounters or while in custody. These reports highlight the ongoing human rights abuses and the severe repression faced by the people of Kashmir under Indian occupation.

The reports further reveal that at least twenty-six people were injured as Indian troops and police used brute force on peaceful protesters. In addition, 570 civilians, primarily youth and political activists, were arrested under draconian laws such as the Public Safety Act (PSA) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Among those detained was prominent lawyer and former head of the Kashmir Bar Association, Mian Abdul Qayoom. These arrests occurred during at least 196 cordon and search operations throughout the month.

Adding to the repression, the Modi regime prohibited Kashmiris from offering Eid-ul-Azha prayers at the historical Jamia Masjid and Eidgah in Srinagar. This restriction on religious freedom underscores the extent of the Indian government’s control over the region. The troops also damaged two houses and molested a woman, further illustrating the daily violence and indignities faced by Kashmiris.

Advocate Abdul Rashid Minhas, spokesman for the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, condemned these systematic human rights violations. He stated that such abuses have become the norm in occupied Kashmir, especially since the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019. The revocation removed the special autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir, intensifying the Indian government’s efforts to stifle the Kashmiri voice for freedom. The BJP-led Indian government employs draconian measures to terrorize and repress the political struggle of the Kashmiri people.

The presence of nearly one million Indian troops has turned IIOJK into the most militarized zone in the world. This militarization has led to widespread human rights abuses and has created an urgent need for international attention and intervention. The global community must recognize the severity of the situation in Kashmir and take action to protect the rights and freedoms of the Kashmiri people. The reports call for urgent international attention to address the human rights crisis in Kashmir. The ongoing violence, arbitrary arrests, and restrictions on religious and political freedoms are clear violations of international law. It is imperative for the international community to hold the Indian government accountable for its actions and to support the Kashmiri people in their struggle for self-determination and justice
