Pakistan’s Unwavering Support for Kashmiri Self-Determination: Caretaker PM
January 5, 2024Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan, Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to providing unwavering moral, political, and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri people in their just struggle for rights, including the inalienable right to self-determination, as mandated by relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.
In a statement commemorating Self-Determination Day, Kakar highlighted the 75th anniversary of the resolution adopted by the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP), emphasizing the commitment to resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute through a free and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices. This, he stated, reaffirmed the Kashmiris’ inalienable right to self-determination, enshrined in international law and supported by human rights instruments worldwide.
Expressing regret over more than seven and a half decades of unfulfilled promises, Kakar emphasized that the people of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) have been denied their fundamental right to self-determination. He accused India of continuing to oppress the Kashmiri people, attempting to break their will through unjust means.
Kakar pointed out that since August 5, 2019, India has been engaged in a concerning effort to alter the demographic structure and political landscape of IIOJK, aiming to disempower the Kashmiri community in their own land. He denounced the recent Indian Supreme Court verdict on the status of IIOJK, considering it another step towards denying the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination. According to Kakar, the genuine aspirations of the Kashmiris cannot be dismissed through domestic legislation and manipulated judicial decisions.
Highlighting the annual resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the “Universal Realization of the Right of the People to Self-Determination,” Kakar underscored the international community’s responsibility, particularly the United Nations, in ensuring that the people of IIOJK are granted their inalienable right to self-determination. To conclude, the Caretaker Prime Minister’s message underscores Pakistan’s enduring support for the Kashmiri cause and its commitment to seeking justice through diplomatic channels. The international community is urged to pay attention to the plight of the people living under forced occupation, emphasizing the imperative role of the United Nations in facilitating the realization of the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.
