Kashmiri Students in Karnataka Face Restrictions on Beard Length

Kashmiri students at a Bengaluru college in Karnataka are facing strict regulations over their beards, which they keep for cultural and religious reasons. More than 20 students have been instructed by the college administration to trim their beards to a “01” trimmer length or remain clean-shaven as a prerequisite for participating in college activities and attending clinical duties.

Those who do not adhere to these requirements are reportedly being marked absent, which is affecting their attendance and academic records.

In response, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has formally appealed to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to intervene. In their letter, the Association expressed concerns over the college’s policy, highlighting that it imposes unnecessary restrictions on students’ personal appearance, disregarding their cultural and religious practices. The Association urged for an immediate review of the mandate to ensure respect for students’ rights and cultural practices.
