Incarcerated Kashmiri politician Engineer Rashid, who recently won the parliamentary election from the Baramulla constituency in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, has applied for interim bail in a Delhi court to take his oath as a Member of the Indian Parliament.

Engineer Rashid, an independent candidate, defeated National Conference candidate Omar Abdullah. He has been lodged in Tihar Jail since August 9, 2019, after being arrested by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh of Delhi’s Patiala House court has directed the NIA to respond to the bail application by today. Engineer Rashid’s counsel, Advocate Vikhyat Oberoi, mentioned in a media interview that an application seeking interim bail and alternative custody parole to take the oath and perform parliamentary functions was filed on Wednesday.

The matter was initially listed for June 6, but the NIA’s failure to file a reply led to the court adjourning the hearing today on the 7th of June.
