Urgent Call to the UN: Safeguarding Kashmiri Self-Determination
September 3, 2024Hurriyat leaders and organizations have issued a strong appeal to the United Nations, urging the body to uphold the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination. They emphasize the need for decisive action to prevent the South Asian region from descending into a situation similar to the Middle East conflict.
In statements released from Srinagar, these leaders highlighted Kashmir as a significant test for the UN. As one of the oldest issues on its agenda, it requires sustained international focus. They emphasized that the Kashmir dispute is classified under the UN Security Council’s jurisdiction, making the right to self-determination a fundamental principle of the UN Charter.
The leaders criticized the Indian government’s actions in Indian-illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), arguing that they undermine the credibility of the UN. They specifically pointed to India’s violations of international laws and conventions regarding Kashmir. The leaders condemned the illegal alteration of demographics in IIOJK, which they believe flagrantly contravenes UN resolutions.
They stressed that the UN has a crucial role in restoring the Kashmiri people’s inalienable right to self-determination. Immediate intervention is necessary to prevent further demographic changes imposed by India in the region, they asserted.
This appeal highlights the urgency of addressing the Kashmir issue with the seriousness it demands, ensuring that international norms and resolutions are respected and upheld.
