The Rathoa-Haryam Bridge Project: Transforming Connectivity and Development in AJK
September 5, 2024The Rathoa-Haryam Bridge project in Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), was initiated on August 23, 2006. This ambitious infrastructure endeavor was designed to link Mirpur with nearby towns, including Kotli district, and to serve as a major tourist attraction.
The project encompasses a total length of 7.181 kilometers, with the main bridge spanning 2.975 kilometers. The Mirpur approach road is 1.925 kilometers long, while the road from Islamgarh extends 2.281 kilometers.
Initially approved at Rs. 1,394.653 million, the project’s budget underwent several revisions. By May 27, 2011, the cost had risen to Rs. 4,232.855 million, with a projected completion date of June 2014. Further increases pushed the budget to Rs. 6,480.159 million by October 2017, extending the expected completion to December 2021.
Despite progress, with approach roads 100% complete and over 75% of the main bridge finished, the project remains incomplete. The central 160-meter span has yet to be constructed, undermining much of the significant investment.
The bridge was envisioned to reduce travel distances and time significantly. It aimed to cut the journey between Mirpur and Mangla Lake by 21 kilometers and by 25 minutes. Additionally, it sought to shorten the distance to Kotli district headquarters by 20%.
The project has faced frequent delays, primarily due to design changes and escalating costs. This has caused frustration among local residents, who eagerly await the bridge’s benefits. Once finished, the bridge is expected to boost the local economy by improving market access, reducing transportation costs, and attracting investment.
Over the years, local appeals to various Pakistani Prime Ministers for resolution had little impact. However, the current government has taken a notable step to address the issue. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s administration, despite facing economic difficulties, has allocated a historic 23-billion-rupee subsidy for AJK. Of this, 10 billion rupees have been specifically designated for the bridge’s expedited completion.
This decision highlights the Pakistan Prime Minister’s commitment to enhancing living standards in AJK and supporting regional development.
The bridge will significantly enhance travel efficiency between Mirpur and Islamgarh, benefiting trade, commerce, and access to essential services like education and healthcare.
The new infrastructure is expected to stimulate economic activity, particularly in transportation, logistics, and retail sectors. It will facilitate the movement of goods and people, boosting local businesses and contributing to overall regional development.
Indeed, enhanced connectivity will strengthen social ties between Mirpur and Islamgarh, making it easier for residents to visit family, attend social events, and engage in cultural and recreational activities.
