Systematic Violence and Impunity: The Continuing Crisis in IIOJK
August 28, 2024Extrajudicial killings and staged encounters remain a persistent issue in Indian-illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), with the Narendra Modi government’s harsh policies showing no signs of easing. The recent death of Riyaz Ahmad Dar in Baramulla underscores this troubling trend.
Dar, a young Kashmiri, was killed in a fake encounter by Indian troops just two days ago. This tragic event highlights a disturbing pattern of violence against Kashmiri youth, driven by oppressive laws and a pervasive sense of impunity among the forces.
Since 1989, approximately 96,340 Kashmiris have lost their lives in the region. Among these, 7,347 were victims of fake encounters and custodial deaths. The ongoing silence of the international community on these severe human rights abuses has only strengthened the perpetrators’ resolve, leaving Kashmiris in continued suffering under India’s harsh occupation.
The execution of fake encounters is a clear violation of the UN Charter, which mandates the protection of human rights. The global community must address these extrajudicial killings and hold the Modi administration accountable for its widespread and systematic violations in IIOJK.
Despite the relentless violence and oppression, the spirit and determination of the Kashmiri people remain unbroken. The international community’s intervention is crucial in bringing justice and ending this cycle of brutality.
