PDP’s Call to Restore IIOJK’s Stolen Rights
December 16, 2024Will democratic defiance restore IIOJK’s special status in the face of rising hostility and political suppression?
The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to reignite its fight for peace, dignity, and justice in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). At its general council meeting in Srinagar, led by President Mehbooba Mufti, the party reaffirmed its commitment to utilizing all democratic and constitutional means to address the Kashmir dispute. Central to this resolution is the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, unilaterally revoked by India on August 5, 2019.
The PDP declared its unwavering opposition to the unconstitutional actions that stripped the region of its autonomy. It reiterated its founding principles, pledging to continue its struggle for justice and dignity. “We resolve to reinvigorate our struggle for peace with dignity for Jammu and Kashmir, using lawful methods to restore the rights of its people,” the resolution stated.
The party also expressed deep concern over the rising wave of hostility and hatred against Muslims across India. The PDP urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to act decisively to curb the growing Islamophobia and communal violence. It called on him to dismantle divisive narratives, curb judicial overreach, and address the deliberate targeting of Muslims. “The increasing climate of hatred undermines India’s democratic ethos and threatens communal harmony,” the resolution warned.
Highlighting the plight of political prisoners, the PDP demanded a thorough review of their status and the immediate release of those detained on flimsy or baseless charges. It called for transferring detained individuals back to Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring justice and preserving family ties. The party emphasized that these unlawful detentions reflect the ongoing disempowerment and humiliation inflicted on the region’s people.
The PDP condemned the continuing deprivation caused by the revocation of Article 370, calling it an unconstitutional act that has exacerbated the grievances of Jammu and Kashmir’s residents. It urged the Modi government to reverse the decision and address the deep-seated issues stemming from this unilateral move. The party reaffirmed its dedication to fighting for the restoration of constitutional rights and justice for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
By reigniting its struggle, the PDP aims to ensure that the voices of Jammu and Kashmir’s people are heard. Its resolution is not only a demand for justice but also a rejection of the suppression and systemic disempowerment imposed on the region.
