PDP Leader Raises Alarm Over Indian Agencies’ Influence in IIOJK Elections
August 9, 2024Iltija Mufti, a prominent leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and daughter of PDP President Mehbooba Mufti, has expressed serious concerns about the increasing role of Indian security agencies and the administration installed by New Delhi in the electoral process of Indian-illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). She warns that their dominance might cement the territory’s reputation as a “police state.”
Her remarks come as the Election Commission of India (ECI) visits IIOJK to evaluate the preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections.
In a recent post on X, Iltija Mufti highlighted her concerns, stating that while political parties in IIOJK are likely pushing for early elections, the apprehension of security agencies and the local administration could overshadow the process. She cautioned that allowing these entities to dominate the electoral environment might further entrench the perception of Jammu and Kashmir as a region controlled by a “deep state” and a “police state,” undermining democratic principles.
The ECI delegation, led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, has been engaging with political party representatives and senior officials from both the police and civil administration in IIOJK to assess the situation on the ground.
Iltija’s comments highlight the growing anxiety among political leaders in IIOJK regarding the level of control exerted by Indian agencies over the electoral process. This situation threatens to undermine the credibility of the democratic process in the region, as perceived interference by security forces could hinder genuine democratic representation and fair elections.
