Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent visit to Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) on November 6, 2024, marked a significant step in the region’s development. During his visit, the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation for several key infrastructure and energy projects aimed at transforming GB into a hub of economic growth and prosperity.

A major focus of the visit was addressing the region’s energy shortages. Prime Minister Sharif announced two new hydropower projects and a 100MW solar energy project, all set to alleviate the winter electricity crisis and improve energy access for local communities. The government’s commitment to improving GB’s infrastructure was further underscored by the launch of several road and bridge projects, aimed at enhancing connectivity within the region and beyond.

In his speech, Prime Minister Sharif highlighted the role these projects would play in harnessing the region’s tourism potential. He discussed efforts to promote tourism in collaboration with international partners such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia, envisioning a new era of global investment and local economic benefits.

The government has also focused on improving education and job opportunities for GB’s youth. Prime Minister Sharif laid the foundation for a new technical university and announced a Rs. 1 billion merit-based endowment fund to support students at Baltistan University and Karakorum University. Additionally, the government has pledged to provide IT training to equip young people with the skills needed for dignified employment, particularly abroad.

In another major initiative, the Prime Minister inaugurated Phase II of the SFiber Project, which will lay 950 km of optical fiber cable across GB. This project is set to connect 15,000 customers and enhance digital connectivity, bringing high-speed internet to remote areas, fostering digital inclusion, and opening doors to job opportunities in the IT sector.

The government’s development efforts also extend to disaster relief. Prime Minister Sharif expressed gratitude to GB residents and celebrated the successful rehousing of families affected by past natural disasters. His government has set up a Rs. 6.7 million endowment fund to support survivors like Qandeel, a young survivor of a previous disaster.

With these multifaceted initiatives, the government of Pakistan is working to create a brighter future for Gilgit-Baltistan, focusing on sustainable development, education, energy solutions, and regional connectivity, while countering external efforts to destabilize the region. These steps reinforce the Pakistani government’s commitment to the well-being and prosperity of the people of GB.
