Omar Abdullah condemns Modi’s dual governance in Jammu and Kashmir as a disastrous strategy undermining autonomy and development

Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), has vehemently criticized the territory’s dual governance structure, where power is shared with the Lieutenant Governor.

In a stern statement issued from Srinagar, Abdullah labeled the current arrangement as a “recipe for disaster.” He demanded that the Indian government honor its promise to restore full statehood to Kashmir, emphasizing the futility of the existing power-sharing model.

Since assuming office in October, Abdullah has harbored cautious optimism regarding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. He cited repeated assurances from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah during election campaigns as the basis for his hope. However, he remains skeptical about their commitment to fulfilling these promises.

Abdullah stressed the necessity for a unified leadership model, drawing parallels to effective corporate governance. He argued that no successful organization thrives with multiple power centers, likening the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir to a sports team struggling without a single, strong captain.

Since Jammu and Kashmir was illegally turned into a Union Territory in August 2019, Abdullah pointed out that the region has not witnessed any significant improvements in governance or development. He criticized the Indian government for failing to deliver tangible benefits, leaving the people of Kashmir without the promised advancements.

The dual governance structure has not only stalled progress but also exacerbated economic and social stagnation in the region. Abdullah highlighted that the lack of streamlined authority has led to inefficient administration, hindering effective policy implementation and development projects.

Abdullah accused the Modi regime of undermining Kashmiri autonomy through this flawed governance model. By maintaining control over key administrative functions, the Indian government continues to marginalize local leaders and suppress the region’s self-determination aspirations.

He urged the international community to recognize the detrimental effects of India’s policies in IIOJK. Abdullah emphasized that without addressing the governance issues, lasting peace and stability in South Asia remain unattainable.

Despite the oppressive governance, Abdullah remains resolute in his fight for Kashmir’s rightful statehood. He vowed to continue advocating for the Kashmiri people’s rights, challenging India’s authoritarian measures, and pushing for a democratic resolution to the long-standing dispute.
