Chief Minister of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Omar Abdullah, voiced skepticism toward the BJP-led government in India, expressing hope that its policies would not permanently define the region. Speaking on the closing day of IIOJK’s legislative assembly session, Abdullah highlighted that the assembly’s resolution calling for the restoration of the region’s special status had revived the voice of Kashmiris, instilling new hope for the future.

Abdullah described the assembly’s first session since its reestablishment as historic, stressing the importance of respecting IIOJK’s unique identity. He pledged his government’s commitment to the welfare of all citizens, aiming to address the long-standing issues faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Reflecting on changes since 2014, Abdullah recalled a time when IIOJK had its own flag, constitution, and autonomy, which he lamented were revoked with the BJP’s abrogation of Article 370 and 35A on August 5, 2019. He noted the painful period that followed, marked by the detention of political leaders, including himself. Despite these events, he expressed optimism about the future, believing that the restoration of statehood and autonomy would come with time.

Abdullah criticized BJP members for their disruptions in the assembly, noting their walkout on the final day in protest of the resolution. The BJP staged demonstrations throughout the session, objecting to the call for restoring special status and leading to chaotic scenes. In response, 12 BJP members were expelled on the final day, bringing the total to 15 expulsions over the five-day session, which concluded on November 8.
