New York’s Times Square to Witness Kashmiri Protest on August 4 Against India’s Decision to Abolish Jammu and Kashmir’s Autonomy
July 30, 2024Kashmiri-Americans and their supporters will protest later this week to mark India’s annexation of Jammu and Kashmir. This move aims to alter its internationally-recognized disputed status and undermine Kashmiris’ self-determination.
“The abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A of India’s Constitution was an act of ultimate aggression and assault on the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” said Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Secretary-General.
Speaking at a meeting at Sardar Aftab Roshan Khan’s residence, a Kashmiri activist, Dr. Fai emphasized that the Indian move contravenes UN resolutions, which prohibit unilateral actions to change the state’s disputed nature.
“Due to the illegal actions by the Modi government, the situation in Kashmir has deteriorated. The territory is now on the brink of genocide,” Dr. Fai stated, citing a report by Genocide Watch, known for its work in genocide studies.
“Let us send a clear message to the world community that the global Kashmiri diaspora and friends of Kashmir stand committed to carrying on the struggle until the final settlement of the Kashmir dispute.”
Sardar Shoaib Irshad, joint Secretary of Kashmir American Welfare Association (KAWA), announced that the peaceful protest in New York will be held on Sunday, August 4, 2024. The demonstration aims to highlight the plight of Kashmiris and the illegal actions taken by the Indian government.
Participants hope to draw international attention to the ongoing human rights abuses in Kashmir and the need for a peaceful resolution in line with UN resolutions. This protest is part of a broader effort to mobilize global support for Kashmir’s right to self-determination.
The abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special autonomous status. This move has led to increased military presence and human rights violations in the region. The Kashmiri diaspora and their supporters demand that the international community hold India accountable for its actions.
Dr. Fai and other activists stress the importance of peaceful protest and international solidarity in their struggle. They call on the UN and other international bodies to intervene and ensure that Kashmiris can exercise their right to self-determination.
The planned protest in New York is expected to draw significant attention and participation from various human rights organizations and supporters of the Kashmiri cause. The organizers hope to keep the issue of Kashmir in the global spotlight and pressure India to comply with international law.
The demonstration underscores the ongoing commitment of the Kashmiri diaspora to advocate for their homeland’s rights. They vow to continue their efforts until justice and peace are achieved for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
