Modi’s Global Rhetoric Exposed as Hypocrisy: APHC Slams Double Standards on Democracy and Terrorism

While Modi champions democracy and denounces terrorism abroad, his regime continues to silence dissent and unleash state repression in occupied Kashmir — a hypocrisy the APHC says can no longer be hidden.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has strongly criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what it calls a glaring contradiction between his international speeches and his domestic actions, especially in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

In a statement issued from Srinagar, APHC spokesperson Advocate Abdul Rashid Minhas accused Modi of projecting himself as a defender of democracy and opponent of terrorism on the global stage, while suppressing fundamental rights and promoting state violence at home.

“Modi talks about peace and democracy in international forums, yet back home, especially in Kashmir, he promotes fear and oppression,” Minhas stated. “This is state-sponsored terror, plain and simple.”

The APHC pointed to ongoing crackdowns in the region, including house raids, mass arrests, and the disappearance of innocent Kashmiris, as stark evidence of the regime’s authoritarian methods. The spokesperson emphasized that Modi’s claims of combating terrorism ring hollow when his government itself uses brutal force to stifle dissent.

In recent years, IIOJK has witnessed intensified military operations, suppression of media, and a clampdown on civil liberties—all of which contradict the democratic image India tries to maintain abroad. Rights groups have repeatedly called out the use of draconian laws, such as the Public Safety Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, to silence activists, journalists, and ordinary civilians.

According to the APHC, the Modi-led government has also pursued hostile policies against Pakistan, escalating regional tensions while pretending to be a peace advocate internationally. “His anti-Pakistan agenda is politically driven and aimed at winning votes by stoking nationalist sentiment,” the statement added.

The Hurriyat leadership noted that Kashmiris have long endured political oppression and human rights violations under successive Indian governments, but the Modi regime has taken the repression to unprecedented levels. They cited increasing incidents of enforced disappearances and custodial torture, along with restrictions on religious and cultural freedoms.

Despite this, Modi continues to receive international praise for his supposed democratic values, a narrative the APHC said is dangerously misleading. “The world must see through this double face—one for foreign leaders, the other for the oppressed people under Indian rule,” Minhas asserted.

The statement called on international human rights organizations and global democratic institutions to stop overlooking these contradictions and hold India accountable for its actions in Kashmir.

“This is not just about Kashmir. It’s about the credibility of the international community. If Modi’s words are accepted without scrutiny, it sends the wrong message to all authoritarian regimes,” the APHC concluded.

As Modi seeks to bolster India’s global image as a democratic superpower, voices from within Kashmir continue to reveal a darker reality—one in which democratic ideals are spoken but never practiced.
