Modi Government’s Controversial Bills in Lok Sabha: A Violation of UN Resolutions on Kashmir
December 8, 2023The recent passage of two bills in the Lok Sabha by the Narendra Modi-led Indian government has sparked controversy, with critics arguing that the legislation blatantly violates United Nations resolutions. The bills in question, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill and the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, are seen as a strategic move to dilute Muslim majority representation in the occupied Jammu and Kashmir’s assembly.
The bills are perceived as an attempt to politically and economically cripple the Muslim population in the region. The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill aims to increase seats for non-Muslims, specifically targeting the Kashmiri migrant community (Pandits) and displaced persons from Azad Kashmir. In addition, the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill seeks to redefine the eligibility criteria for reservation in appointments and admissions.
Critics argue that these legislative changes, including the redrawing of electoral boundaries, granting more seats to the Hindu-dominated Jammu, and nominating three seats for non-Muslims, are part of a broader agenda to install a Hindu Chief Minister in Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir.
Allocating seats for Pandits and those who migrated from Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) after 1947, along with providing reservation in various sectors, the Modi government is making concerted efforts to disempower Kashmiri Muslims. The reports allege that the ultimate goal is to obliterate the Muslim identity and establish a Hindu civilization in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, echoing the agenda of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
This move comes after the controversial abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which had previously provided a constitutional barrier safeguarding the rights of Kashmiri Muslims. The United Nations to intervene and take notice of what it describes as the Modi regime’s sinister plans in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), calling for a halt to the violation of UN resolutions on Kashmir.
As international concerns grow over the situation in Kashmir, the Modi government’s actions continue to be closely scrutinized, with calls for diplomatic intervention to address the perceived human rights violations and breaches of UN resolutions in the region.
