Modi Faces Backlash Over Mosque Visits Amid Domestic Violence Against Muslims
September 3, 2024Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is under fire for visiting mosques in Gulf countries while facing allegations of supporting individuals who incite violence against Muslims in India.
The controversy intensified following comments by Nitesh Rane, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Maharashtra. Rane publicly threatened to kill Muslims found in mosques during rallies, which sparked widespread condemnation.
Political leaders and journalists have condemned Rane’s remarks, labeling them as inflammatory and dangerous. Tejashwi Yadav, former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), criticized Modi for apparent double standards. Yadav accused Modi of showcasing solidarity with Muslims abroad while allegedly endorsing those who incite violence against them domestically.
Prominent journalist Rajdeep Sardesai condemned Rane’s statements as “brazen hate” and “incitement to violence.” Sardesai called for legal action against Rane, emphasizing the gravity of his comments.
The situation underscores a significant disconnect between Modi’s international diplomatic gestures and the domestic political climate, raising questions about his stance on minority issues in India.
