Missile Test Sparks Concerns and Resentment in India
July 24, 2024In a move raising concerns about India’s role in the South Asian arms race, the Odisha government relocated over 10,000 people from 10 villages ahead of a missile test.
The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) completed preparations for the test at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur. The missile will be launched from pad number 3.
The Balasore district administration evacuated 10,581 people living within a 3.5 km radius of the launch pad. Villagers expressed resentment, alleging inadequate compensation for their displacement.
Critics argue that India’s missile tests and military modernization are fueling an arms race, potentially destabilizing the already tense regional security situation.
