Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Denies Allegations of Illegal Land Allotment: Calls It Political Harassment
May 23, 2024Senior All Parties Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has firmly rejected allegations of illegal land allotment brought against him by Indian authorities. In a statement issued from Srinagar, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq described the allegations as baseless and an attempt to tarnish his reputation and harass him.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq clarified that his residence in Nigeen, Srinagar, was legally purchased and built by his father, Mirwaiz Molvi Mohammad Farooq, in 1973. He asserted that he does not own any current property in the area in question. He also stated that he has not received any official notification or notice from authorities regarding these allegations.
The allegations, according to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, are a continuation of previous false propaganda against him, which emerged in 2018 and were subsequently proven unfounded. He emphasized that these latest claims are politically motivated, aimed at defaming him and silencing his voice.
Earlier, the Anti-Corruption Bureau had filed an FIR against Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and his relatives, implicating them in a land allotment case related to his residence in Nigeen. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has categorically denied any involvement in illegal activities and regards the accusations as part of a broader strategy to undermine his credibility.
The allegations have provoked widespread anger among the Kashmiri people, who perceive them as another effort by Indian authorities to stifle dissent in the occupied territory. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a prominent leader of the Kashmiri resistance movement, has been under continuous house detention since May 3rd. He is well-known for his vocal criticism of India’s policies in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, particularly those perceived as advancing Hindutva ideologies.
Supporters and observers argue that these allegations are a deliberate attempt to distract from the real issues faced by the people of Kashmir and to weaken the leadership of the resistance movement. The timing and nature of the accusations are seen as part of a larger campaign to discredit and demoralize key figures advocating for Kashmiri rights and autonomy.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s steadfast denial and the backlash from the Kashmiri populace highlight the ongoing tensions and the deep-rooted mistrust between the region’s residents and the Indian authorities.
