Mehdi Rejects Reinterpretation of J&K Legislative Assembly’s Special Status Motion
November 16, 2024Srinagar Member of Parliament Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has issued a strong rebuke to political leaders and parties attempting to misrepresent the resolution passed during the first session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
Ruhullah emphasized that neither Congress nor the Jammu Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) leadership, nor any member of his own National Conference (NC) party, holds the authority to reinterpret the resolution’s intent. He clarified that the resolution was an unmistakable reflection of the people’s discontent with the amendments and the unconstitutional abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status from 1953 to 2019.
Ruhullah underscored that the resolution explicitly demands the restoration of all guarantees, including Articles 370 and 35A, to their original pre-1953 status. He warned that any attempt to dilute or manipulate the resolution would lead to political alienation, drawing parallels to the public rejection faced by the BJP’s former allies in recent elections.
This statement highlights the ongoing political struggle in Jammu and Kashmir, with local leaders pushing back against perceived attempts to undermine the region’s unique constitutional identity. Ruhullah’s caution serves as a reminder of the people’s resolute stance on preserving their rights and autonomy.
