Mehbooba Mufti Urges Safety for Kashmiri Students Amid Rising Tensions in India

Amid growing communal unrest and fear, Mehbooba Mufti voices urgent concerns over the safety of Kashmiri students and calls for a compassionate policy shift by the Indian government.

In Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has voiced serious concern for the well-being of Kashmiri students studying across India, especially after the recent Pahalgam false flag attack.

According to Mufti, her office in Srinagar has been flooded with distress calls from Kashmiri students who fear for their safety. Many have reportedly been facing acts of intimidation and growing hostility in the aftermath of the attack.

She has called on the Indian Home Ministry and Chief Ministers of all Indian states to immediately intervene. Her plea centers around ensuring that Kashmiri students, already in a vulnerable position, are protected from hate crimes and harassment.

Mufti strongly condemned the wave of hate-filled and communal rhetoric being spread on social media platforms by Hindutva activists. She emphasized the dangerous impact of such propaganda, urging authorities to take firm action against those spreading communal hate and further polarizing society.

In addition to this, Mufti criticized the Indian government’s ongoing efforts to deport Pakistani nationals who are married to Kashmiri citizens. Many of these individuals, she noted, have lived in IIOJK for decades, raising families and contributing meaningfully to local communities.

Forcibly deporting these women, who have been deeply integrated into Kashmiri society, would not only be inhumane but would also inflict emotional trauma on their families. She urged the Indian authorities to consider the humanitarian aspect of the issue rather than taking a rigid approach.

Mufti also addressed recent remarks made by Farooq Abdullah, the President of the National Conference (NC), who advocated for stronger action against Pakistan, potentially more aggressive than the Balakot airstrike.

She questioned the NC chief’s fluctuating stance, pointing out that he has at times advocated for peace talks with Pakistan, while at other times, he supports military strikes. This inconsistency, she argued, reflects political opportunism rather than a sincere commitment to resolving tensions.

In her statement, Mehbooba Mufti presented a clear contrast between appeasing political interests and adopting a consistent, humane policy for long-term peace and justice in IIOJK.

Her message was not just a criticism of government policies but also a heartfelt appeal for empathy, unity, and the protection of innocent lives affected by larger political narratives.
