Mehbooba Mufti Condemns Waqf Amendment Bill, Calls it an Attack on Muslim Rights
April 3, 2025People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has strongly criticized the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, stating that it is designed to disempower Muslims in India.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Mehbooba Mufti, reacting to the bill tabled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in the Lok Sabha, expressed her concerns over the continuous marginalization of Muslims. She remarked, “I don’t have any hope with the BJP but have high hopes with secular Hindus. They must come forward as this country has to run as per the constitution.”
She highlighted the increasing persecution faced by Muslims in India, citing incidents of targeted lynching, attacks on mosques, and encroachments on Muslim graveyards. Urging the Hindu community to stand against such injustices, she called for collective resistance to protect constitutional values.
Mehbooba Mufti further described the bill as part of a broader conspiracy to weaken the Muslim community, emphasizing that over the past decade, attacks on Muslims have intensified. She noted that mosques have been demolished, cases of mob violence have surged, and systematic encroachments on Muslim properties have become widespread.
Her remarks have sparked a debate on the intent and implications of the Waqf Amendment Bill, with critics viewing it as another step towards curbing the rights of the Muslim community. The bill’s passage is likely to face resistance from opposition parties and civil rights groups advocating for minority rights in India.
