Mehbooba Mufti and Daughter Placed Under House Arrest Amid Rising Tensions in IIOJK

Srinagar, IIOJK – Authorities in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) have placed Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti and her daughter, Iltija Mufti, under house arrest in Srinagar, sparking concerns over the region’s ongoing political and human rights situation.

According to reports from Kashmir Media Service, Iltija Mufti took to social media to inform the public about the development. In her post, she stated, “My mother & I both have been placed under house arrest. Our gates have been locked up.” She further revealed that her mother had planned to visit Sopore to meet the family of Waseem Mir, a truck driver who was fatally shot by Indian forces earlier in the week.

Iltija Mufti also disclosed that she herself was scheduled to visit Kathua to console the family of Makhan Din, who reportedly died due to torture while in the custody of the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Indian police. Expressing her frustration over the authorities’ actions, she stated, “Nothing has changed in Kashmir even after elections. Now even comforting the families of victims is being criminalised.”

The house arrest of the PDP leader and her daughter underscores the prevailing restrictions on political activity and freedom of movement in the region. Mehbooba Mufti, a vocal critic of India’s policies in Jammu and Kashmir, has repeatedly condemned the suppression of civil rights and the heavy-handed approach adopted by security forces.

The situation escalated following the killing of Waseem Ahmad Mir, a truck driver who was reportedly shot dead by Indian troops at Sangrama Chowk in Baramulla district. The incident triggered widespread outrage, with many viewing it as yet another example of extrajudicial actions carried out by security forces. In a subsequent event, the arrest and alleged custodial killing of Makhan Din in Billawar, Kathua, added fuel to the growing tensions.
