Kashmiri Diaspora Plans Protest at UNGA to Highlight Kashmir’s Plight
September 10, 2024In Springfield, Virginia, representatives from the Kashmiri diaspora convened to organize a significant protest. Scheduled for September 28, the demonstration will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York during the Indian delegate’s address to the 79th UN General Assembly (UNGA).
The protest’s primary goal is to emphasize the human rights abuses in Indian-illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). It seeks to challenge the Indian government’s actions in the region and demand international attention to the ongoing conflict.
The meeting, orchestrated by the World Kashmir Awareness Forum, was a strategic planning session. Participants discussed how to effectively call out the Indian representative for advocating a nation that has occupied Jammu and Kashmir for 77 years.
Key decisions were made to maximize the protest’s impact. Attendees were encouraged to recruit at least ten additional supporters each. Local mosque imams will be asked to announce the protest to raise community awareness. Sardar Shoaib Irshad was appointed as the protest coordinator, and arrangements were made for three buses to transport participants from Washington to New York.
Prominent Kashmiri leaders, including Dr. Ghulam N. Mir, Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, and Sardar Zubair Khan, were present at the meeting. Their involvement underscores the protest’s significance and the high level of organization behind it.
The aim of the protest is twofold: to increase global awareness about the dire situation in Kashmir and to advocate for a peaceful resolution to the dispute. The organizers hope that by drawing attention at such a high-profile event as the UNGA, they can put pressure on the international community to address the issues in Kashmir more robustly.
This planned demonstration reflects the ongoing frustration among Kashmiri communities worldwide. They seek to ensure that their plight is not ignored and that substantial steps are taken toward resolving the conflict.
