January 5 and the Unfulfilled Right to Self-Determination for Kashmir
January 5, 2025How long can the world turn a blind eye to the cries for justice from IIOJK? The international community’s indifference is fueling a volatile situation that could erupt into a catastrophic conflict.
Leading Kashmiri and global scholars have condemned the UN’s failure to enforce its January 5, 1949 resolutions on Kashmir. They stress that a UN-supervised plebiscite is the only path to justice.
Dr. Imtiaz Khan, a Kashmiri-American scholar, highlighted the dire consequences of the unresolved Kashmir conflict. With three nuclear nations involved, the risk to global peace is undeniable. The world’s apathy fuels further instability.
Dr. Khan criticized India’s brutal suppression of Kashmiris and the international community’s silence. He insisted that India’s mock elections deceive no one. A legitimate plebiscite under UN supervision is essential.
Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Chairman of the World Forum for Peace and Justice, echoed these concerns. He cited ongoing violence and the looming threat of genocide in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The UN must act before tensions spiral out of control.
Fai warned that denying Kashmiris their right to self-determination invites continued bloodshed. The risk of nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan grows each day the issue remains ignored.
Dr. Ghulam N. Mir, President of the World Kashmir Awareness Forum, made it clear—lasting peace in South Asia depends on Kashmir. He condemned India’s defiance of UN mandates and urged global leaders to force compliance.
Mir demanded the international community ensure Kashmiris’ right to a fair referendum. Prolonged inaction will only perpetuate suffering and regional instability.
Sardar Zarif Khan, Advisor to the President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, reminded the world of its broken promises. Kashmiris were guaranteed the right to choose their destiny. Decades later, that promise remains unfulfilled.
Speakers such as Sardar Shoaib Irshad and Sardar Zubair Khan of KAWA called on the UN to appoint a special envoy. Antonio Guterres must send an impartial observer to Kashmir and report directly to the Security Council.
The consensus among experts is clear. Immediate global intervention is imperative. Ignoring the crisis risks escalating violence and human rights abuses.
The UN’s inaction reveals its weakness and complicity. History will not be kind to those who stood by while IIOJK burned. The time for diplomatic niceties is over.
