Indian Army’s Rampant Corruption: A Growing Concern in India
July 12, 2024The Indian Army has increasingly become a hotbed of corruption, with officers prioritizing personal financial gain over their responsibilities. Embezzlement is rampant, involving officers from generals to majors, particularly those above the rank of colonel who exploit their positions for financial benefits.
From 2000 to 2023, over 1,800 cases of corruption were reported in the Indian Army. Additionally, 72 officers were implicated in the illegal sale of 9mm guns and 30 bolt-action rifles. A CBI report revealed that 17 Indian military officers accepted bribes to recruit new soldiers. Furthermore, three Air Marshals of the Indian Air Force were court-martialed for their involvement in a $20 billion corruption scandal.
These alarming incidents highlight a deep-rooted issue within the Indian military, raising serious concerns about the integrity and accountability of its officers. The pervasive corruption undermines the institution’s credibility and affects its operational effectiveness, calling for stringent measures to address and eradicate corruption in the ranks.
