Prominent Indian social activists have condemned the alarming increase in hate crimes against minorities in Narendra Modi-ruled India.

The collective issued a statement highlighting that India’s electorate recently gave a clear verdict against polarisation and divisive hate campaigns. However, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) refuses to heed this message.

The statement, signed by notable figures including Dr. GG. Parikh, Medha Patkar, Tushar Gandhi, Father Frezier, Dr. Sunilam, Teesta Setalvad, Shabnam Hashmi, Justice Kolse Patil (retd), Irfan Engineer, Dolphy D’Souza, Feroz Mithiborewala, and Guddi, criticized BJP leaders for blaming the minority community for their defeat.

This targeting, endorsed by leaders from the prime minister of India down to state officials, has incited hate and encouraged violent crimes against minorities, a trend the activists strongly condemn.

The activists appealed to the Leader of the Opposition to urgently raise this issue in Parliament and issue a public statement condemning the attacks while reassuring minorities of their safety and security in India.

They also called on the INDIA Bloc and its leaders to mobilize their cadres and citizens to defend minorities by addressing the issue in Parliament, state assemblies, and on the streets of India.

Expressing grave concern over Modi’s provocative and unsubstantiated allegations against minorities, which fuel hate crimes, the activists urged the Chief Justice of India to take suo moto notice of the increasing hate speeches and resulting violent crimes.

They called for the apex court to order the police to act urgently, provide protection to minority communities, and prosecute hate mongers and those committing hate crimes.

The statement underscores the activists’ demand for immediate and concrete actions to protect minorities and uphold justice. They stressed that the electorate’s message should guide political actions rather than polarising rhetoric.

The activists highlighted the dangerous consequences of unchecked hate speech, urging the judiciary to intervene decisively. They emphasized the importance of a united effort to safeguard minority rights and promote communal harmony.

By mobilizing support from various sectors, the activists aim to create a robust response against hate crimes. Their efforts are geared towards fostering an inclusive society where minorities feel safe and respected.

The statement serves as a powerful reminder of the need for vigilance and proactive measures in safeguarding the rights of all citizens. The activists’ collective voice calls for an end to the culture of impunity surrounding hate crimes and a renewed commitment to justice and equality.
