India is in Denial Phase for Self-Determination for Kashmiris: Chairman WFPJ
August 13, 2024Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Chairman of the World Forum for Peace & Justice, has condemned India for denying the people of Jammu and Kashmir their right to self-determination. He argues that the region faces severe human rights violations, including restrictions on freedom of speech, assembly, and travel.
Dr. Fai’s remarks came on the 76th anniversary of the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) resolution of August 13, 1948. This resolution proposed a plebiscite to decide Jammu and Kashmir’s future status.
While both India and Pakistan initially accepted the resolution, Dr. Fai pointed out that India has not implemented it. He criticized India for citing various excuses to avoid holding the plebiscite.
Dr. Fai referenced historical statements by US diplomats, such as Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. and Ambassador Warren Austin, who highlighted the importance of a plebiscite for determining the Kashmiri people’s wishes.
He also condemned India’s recent legislative actions, including the Domicile Law and the issuance of Domicile Certificates. Dr. Fai views these measures as violations of international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
The Chairman urged the United States to lead efforts towards a fair and lasting resolution of the dispute, invoking democratic principles and human rights. He also cited Mahatma Gandhi and Indian delegates to the UN, who emphasized the necessity for Kashmiris to determine their own future.
Dr. Fai’s statement concluded by stressing the need for a just and peaceful resolution to the long-standing issue. He believes that resolving the dispute would benefit India, Pakistan, and US foreign policy.
